What do I need to make my home more accessible and my life easier? We ask ourselves these questions but the answers are not simple ones. The extent of modifications required depends upon the type and degree of disability.

The greatest challenge presented to us is when we have to use a wheelchair or scooter. This could be very frustrating because we promptly realize we need more space to move about. Furniture has to be rearranged or put in storage. Doors are narrow. Kitchen and bathrooms are practically useless. Making your home more wheelchair friendly requires time, research, knowledge, and planning. Your personal involvement is of utmost importance in dealing with designers and contractors.

Our newsletter's new column “It Works” will address these issues in the coming months. In this premier article, we will review DOORS.

Jose says, “I do not proclaim to be an expert in the field of Barrier Free Design, but being a consumer myself gives me the unique opportunity of understanding what works and what doesn't.”
